BUZZ OFF MOSQUITO'S!

BUZZ OFF Mosquito’s !

What is going on with the Mosquito’s this year!?! GEEZ, it’s like a kamikaze ambush every time we walk out the door! You know its bad when your three year old is walking around swatting and clapping the air, saying I got it mommy! The worst is when one narrowly makes it through the front door and disappears - you just know right when your trying to fall asleep the little pesky pilot is going to dive bomb right by your ears! AAAGH!

I have built up a little summer arsenal that I’m going to share and it has proven to be quite effective!

First, you REALLY have to get rid of any standing water FREQUENTLY especially now with all the rain. A mosquito develops from egg to adulthood in 4 to 7 days! So tip your flowerpot trays, turn over toys like buckets and baby pools! Even the smallest of containers can breed thousands of mosquito’s! Check your fire pits, I forgot to tip ours over after the last rain and those larvae were having a huge party! UGH!! Clean your rain gutters of debris; Check your birdbaths and fountain water for larvae. Get some “Mosquito Dunks”, little donut shape mosquito repellant that you put in the water; it’s safe for your yard animals. Have a small outside pond? STOCK UP on goldfish, Koi or Mosquito fish! You have to checkout the brand ECOSMART - Organic BUG fogger and sprays, safe for kids and pets! Bonus! My all time favorite secret weapon against Mosquito's is the Original AVON Skin So Soft spray, works well on my toddler and no deet! Avon now has Skin So Soft Bug Spray! NICE!

Our Family Arsenal Against Mosquito’s=

MOSQUITO DUNKS                     OFF LANTERN

ECOSMART ORGANIC yard fogger  - SAFE FOR KIDS AND PETS

And finally our secret weapon - AVON SKIN SO SOFT sprays

Original and now Bug Spray – WOOHOO!

TRY PLANTING SOME OF THESE PLANTS AND SPICES AROUND YOUR DECK AND YARD TO WARD OFF PESKY INSECTS!

Lemon grass, Rosemary, Basil, Peppermint (BONUS!  Herb Garden)

Marigolds, Catnip = oils are found to be more effective than deet, Citronella Grass, Ageratum – small purple cluster blooms, Pitcher plants – these attract and trap bugs, Eucalyptus, and Geraniums – these come in a variety of colors!

Interesting find! I read that Mosquito’s are attracted to people who eat a more sugary and processed food diet than people who eat a more natural diet with lots of vegetables, fruits and whole grains.

Historical SUNKEN GARDENS – St. Pete’s secret garden!

Looking for a fun family outing or some time to your self? Check out Sunken Gardens!

Sunken Gardens is a Historic St. Petersburg botanical wonder. It’s a labyrinth of shady pathways that wind through the secret gardens. As a child I remember the Extotic Birds, Monkeys and Alligators being there and running around on the winding pathway, playing in the gardens. I am so glad that it is still around to enjoy!

I take my toddler here and she loves it. She loves to look at all the plants and flowers. We blow bubbles on the wedding lawn, there is plenty of room to run around and play.  We take snacks or have a picnic lunch.

There are several Koi ponds throughout the gardens so make sure you get a bag, if not two of the Koi fish food pellets located in the lobby. They are $1.00 a bag and totally worth it. It’s always a lot of fun to watch how thrilled my tot is to feed the fish. You can almost reach out and touch them. SO MUCH FUN!

My little explorer is always so excited to be close to the Macaws and Flamingos. She loves to hear the Kookaburra birds laugh wildly.

If you’re looking for a photo spot, this is a great place! All the lush foliage, exotic trees and flowers, Lily ponds, little shady corners and pathways, the Butterfly, Cactus, and Japanese gardens. There are several mini waterfalls and an arched bridge. ALL make the perfect backdrops for photos. JUST BEAUTIFUL! LOVE IT!!

A Classic Photo MUST is putting your face through the SUNKEN GARDENS RING located by the Wedding Lawn.

In addition to being a great place to get lost in for a couple of hours, SUNKEN GARDENS offers a variety of Horticultural Educational Workshops/Programs and Special Events. Potty Training ~ Mission Accomplished!

Potty training - Mission Accomplished!

HALLELUJAH! The big girl has sung! Finally, we conquered the Potty Training Challenge! WOOHOO!

I tell ya...that took a little longer than I thought to get going ~ we started several months ago but she lost interest so we let it go for a while. When we decided to try again it went much smoother. Here we are now happy and dry! I haven’t yet heard the “flush” on her own yet but she has started to come and tell us when she has to go. That eliminates the every hour on the hour visits to the toilet “just in case”. I still put her in a diaper at sleep times but she has waked up dry for several weeks now, go figure! Not exactly what I expected but YAY! What a relief!

What I found to be most helpful for us, after trying many treats, bribes and pleading, was the potty sticker chart!

We have it right on the wall in front of the potty! We always make a huge deal of it! We wrote her name on the chart and always let her choose what stickers and let her put the stickers on where ever she wanted! Sometimes one, two or more! She loves it! We still use the chart everyday and will continue to do so until she loses interest – So stock up on stickers! We went to the local Party City store and let her pick out all kinds of different stickers, Dora, Hello Kitty, Jungle theme, Underwater theme, they have plenty of everything. It super important to involve your tot in every step so they get excited! We keep the finished potty charts in her room, she loves to look at them and it keeps her motivated!

Another MUST for us is the toilet seat liners! I wont sit on a public toilet seat and I don’t want her to either! EWW! SO…these are essential for a YUCK free experience. We have the Dora ones from Target but they have several to choose from. These liners are PLUSH! Nice thick and soft on top and plastic on the bottom to block out ANY wetness on the seat, with non-slip tabs! BONUS! These are simply amazing, really!  NO MORE restroom anxiety for us, seriously you have to get these just for peace of mind! NO MORE layering the toilet paper all around! NO MORE trying to juggle your tot over the seat without touching anything! When your done use the liner to flush the toilet and dispose! WALAAA! Mission accomplished! These are awesome for any toilet, anywhere! FOR ANY AGE! BONUS!

We have not bought diapers in eight weeks that’s a $240.00 savings for us which paid for her swim lessons and gymnastics! And MORE STICKERS too, BONUS!

So to everyone on the quest of a diaper free household, be consistent, get a potty chart and tons of stickers! In the end the little buggars will go on the toilet when they are ready, but lots of positive reinforcement will get the job started!

GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY PARENTING!

Saturday Morning Fun in Great Downtown St. Pete!

Saturday Morning Fun in St. Petersburg!

We had such a great time in Downtown St. Petersburg!

We started out with a great breakfast at The Hangar Restaurant. This is a fun place to take the kiddos; we like to sit on the back patio overlooking the airport runway. Our little flight attendant loves to watch the planes fly in and take off, it’s a great distraction for her and provides a little conversation time for us parental units!! They have great coffee and reasonable prices with nice portions of food. Its always a good time!

On the way home we decided to stop at the Saturday Morning Market in the Al Lang Stadium parking lot. We got a perfect parking spot right up close and headed into the crowd. We found some yummy Honey by Eden’s Nectar – They make seasonal Honey flavors so of course we got the new Summer blend, it’s nice and smooth. I found a GREAT summer hat at the “It’s Our Nature” booth, it has a very wide brim, and it’s a hand woven Palm hat, complete sun coverage and I LOVE IT! Perfect for St. Pete fun in the sun!

We looked at all the fresh veggies, stopped to pet the dogs, looked at all the fun stuff, we had some fresh cut to order juicy pineapple and as we walked around all the food and spices smelled incredible! Our kiddo picked out some blue and green silver dollar sized glass stones for $1.00 a piece, they are now in our fish aquarium and add a nice splash of color!

It was a really HOT sunny day and on the way out we stopped and got some homemade icee cream that was D-licious!

As we were walking back to the car we noticed some floats cruising by, The Taste of Pinellas parade!

YAY!! CHANGE IN PLANS, we headed towards the flying necklaces! Our little sweaty pink faced tot got her first BEADS!! Woohoo! We then took a stroll past the Museum of Fine Arts into Vinoy Park! After a quick stop for some bottled water from the hot dog stand we found a bench on the water and had a much needed hydration break.

 WOW! GOOD TIMES!

It was a beautiful fun filled Saturday morning right in our downtown!

We LOVE where we live -  ALWAYS something to see and do!

MAYBE WE’LL SEE YOU AT THE HANGAR OR THE SATURDAY MARKET

I’ll be the one in the palm hat chasing the two year old!!

Backyard Wildlife ~ We have baby Screech Owls!

Backyard Wildlife ~ We found Baby Screech Owls!

A fun backyard activity to do is look for animals. My little zoologist and I do this everyday and we always see a lot of creatures. We usually see the squirrels, butterflies, bugs, frogs, sometimes the neighborhood cat who loves to jump our fence and several kinds of birds.

We always see our Blue jays, Mockingbirds, and Cardinals. We like to listen to the different birdcalls and find them in the trees. The other day we watched a Spoonbill try to balance on the power line, talk about a clumsy bird; he was all over the place! I have to say it was oddly funny. We get the occasional visit from a White Egret that I think the neighbors are feeding cat food. We also see a Redtail Hawk that stalks our squirrels! Aaagh! On a lucky day we see the Blue Heron glide overhead.

WELL... we are SUPER EXCITED to announce that we have some new additions to our backyard wildlife! We have Screech Owls in our big Oak tree!! YAY! A mother Screech Owl and THREE babies!!

Our little bird watcher loves to find them in the tree!  It’s a lot of fun to watch the mama owl come out at dusk. The babies will start making a soft chattering sound when they get hungry. The mom owl will swoop around the backyards and bring the babies food.  My future Ornithologist will watch her and start  “WHOO WHOOING”!  It’s really cool to watch! I can’t wait to build our Screech Owls a nesting house! Maybe they’ll stay around and nest again!

 Mama Screech Owl keeping watch!

The three young chicks perched in our backyard tree!

(hard to see - they are stacked in the middle of frame)

~Get out in your own backyard ~

~Take some time to sit back and relax ~

~You just might be surprised what kind of wildlife you'll see!~

Painting Fun with ROCKS!!

Painting fun with ROCKS!

Looking for something creative to do?

Try this! It’s really different and fun to do!

ROCK PAINTING!!

Pull out your Acrylic paint and small paintbrushes, a cup of water for brush rinsing and something to mix your paints on, a paper plate works perfect! Set up your painting area and get ready to have some fun!

Go on a ROCK HUNT in your yard! Collect some rocks ~ try to find ones with smooth surfaces.  I had some left over garden rocks that I had picked up at Home Depot; these are a dark gray and have an all around smooth surface.

Smooth rocks work great for painting on especially if you want to paint little animals, flowers, letters or numbers!

This time we painted numbers 1 ~ 10 for counting and number practice! The alphabet is next! Perfect for creative learning!

Let your little Picasso get to painting and join in on the fun!

These make for adorable keepsakes, paperweights or a cute addition to any potted plant or garden! YAY!

 PAINTING ROCK TIPS ~

~We experimented a little bit and found that on darker rocks if you prime the surface with a layer of white first the other colors will stand out a little more.

~~When you are all finished let the PAINTED ROCKS dry overnight ~ THEN you can finish them off by added a CLEAR COAT of Acrylic to seal the paint on the rocks ~ it helps keep the paint from fading and chipping! For smaller rocks clear nail polish works great!

HAVE FUN AND HAPPY PARENTING!

DOLPHINS and WHALES BLOW BUBBLE RINGS FOR FUN !?! WHO KNEW!!

WOW! This is pretty neat! I think it’s amazing how intelligent and self-aware these animals really are. The bubble ring phenomenon is solely done for the purpose of CREATIVE play! The older dolphins teach the babies how to blow and spin the bubble rings, pretty interesting stuff!

Upon further investigation I found out Dolphins aren’t the only Ceteceans (Dolphins, Whales, and Porpoises) that know this little trick!  Check out the great video links below!!

BUBBLE MANIA!!

See video

BUBBLE MANIA!

This is a really cool video! ENJOY!

I am fascinated with bubbles and have been ever since I was a child! I don’t know what it is exactly about the bubbles that captivate me, maybe its all the moving iridescent colors or the way they silently dance with the wind. Maybe it’s the suspense on how high they will go before they POP! Whatever it is, I LOVE BUBBLES!

My husband used to make fun of me but now that we have our own little toddler, who of course loves bubbles, he is HOOKED too! There is nothing like the look on our little bubble poppers face when she is chasing bubbles in the backyard!!

We have tons of bubbles at home and I carry them in the toddler bag so we are ready for ANYTIME fun!  We use bubbles almost everyday!  Bubbles make for a great reward or a quick distraction! When I was teaching Kindergarten, we had a TREASURE BOX for good behavior; the mini bubbles were always the first to go!

I came across some super fun bubbles and thought I’d share my new finds!

I found these BUBBLE STICKS at WALMART for only $1.00 – YEP! These are REALLY AWESOME! They are BIG brilliant iridescent bubbles! You can blow on the stick or just wave it through the air.  They have an easy screw on top that doesn’t leak! A MUST GET FOR BUBBLE FUN!!!  Seriously, you gotta try these!

GET READY!... They now make COLORED BUBBLES! YAY! SUPER FABULOUS!

We have tried the ZUBBLES brand of colored bubbles, Blue and Pink! They are vibrant and lots of fun! CRAYOLA now has washable colored bubbles too!  Rumor has it that some parents are fuming over the messiness of this crazy new invention, I say get over it and have some fun!! They will figure out the packaging! And the bubble burst spots do fade rather quickly! I would recommend using the colored bubbles in the grass, not on your decks or pavers! Put on your get messy clothes and head out to the backyard!!

HAVE FUN AND HAPPY PARENTING!

St. Patrick's Day BLUE? It's True!

St. Patrick’s Day BLUE? It’s True!

Click here for video ~ http://www.history.com/videos/green

Who knew the original color of St. Patrick’s Day is BLUE! St. Patrick’s blue applies to two shades of blue considered symbolic of Ireland. Historically it is a lighter shade associated with the Badge of the Order of St. Patrick. In modern usage it is a darker shade like the Ireland’s coat of arms.

The ‘Wearing of the GREEN’ started with the rebellion of 1798, Irish soldiers wore full green uniforms on March 17th to get public attention. While GREEN is now the national color, St. Patrick BLUES can still be found on some symbols, including a couple Irish soccer jerseys.

In Irish legends GREEN was worn by fairies and immortals, and also by people with hopes that their crops would grow.

In Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day, people traditionally wear a small bunch of shamrocks on their jackets or hats. Children wear orange, white and green badges, and women and girls wear green ribbons in their hair. Many young people dye their hair green for the special day.

“If you wear GREEN ya won’t get pinched”! It was believed that if you wore GREEN you were invisible to the Leprechauns, who pinched anyone they saw! So the tradition of pinching is to remind ya about the little cranky guys!

On this St. Patrick’s day we will be wearing our traditional GREEN in honor of Ireland and will be adding a smidge of BLUE too!

Happy St. Patty’s day!

LOOK FOR A FOUR LEAF CLOVER!

ST. PATRICK’S DAY IS ON THE WAY ~ LOOK FOR A FOUR LEAF CLOVER!

We all need a little LUCK now and again and what better way to get it than finding a Four Leaf Clover! It’s the perfect time of year to try to find one with St. Patrick’s Day on the way!

A Shamrock is a clover with 3 leaves.  In Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day, people traditionally wear a small bunch of shamrocks on their jackets or hats. When the Irish were under control of the English, many silent protests were held, and each person would wear a shamrock pinned to their shirt. St. Patrick would show the shamrocks three leaves to explain the Holy Trinity ~ Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. That’s how the Shamrock became an Irish Symbol. When a Shamrock is found with the fourth leaf it means God’s Grace.

The Four Leaf Clover is a universal symbol of Good Luck. Each leaf has a meaning first is for HOPE, second is for FAITH, third is for LOVE and the fourth is for LUCK! Legend has it that Eve carried one out of Eden, ok so I’m thinking what would have happened if she found it before she ran into the snake… About one out of 10,000 clovers is a Four Leaf so finding one is believed to be a sign of GOOD FORTUNE!

TRADITIONAL SHAMROCK LUCKY FOUR LEAF CLOVER

Go on a Shamrock and Four Leaf Clover hunt! Get out and get some fresh air, take yourself on a nice walk! It makes for a GREAT outside activity for the kiddos too! Have a picnic in your backyard or at a park and tell your little fairies and leprechauns to look for shamrocks and special four leafs.

Clover patches are almost everywhere. I saw one going into the dentist office this morning I stopped and looked for a four leaf! YEP!  I think people thought I lost a contact lens…lol!

GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY HUNTING!

Here’s something a little extra to pass it forward, I mean technically if you find a Four Leaf you’ll have some GOOD LUCK so why not get some GOOD KARMA too!

I came across this site FIND A FOUR LEAF; they take four leaf clovers and make “clover cards” for hospitalized children! They laminate the dried pressed clovers on a card. The cards have hand written words of encouragement on the back! They take donated Four Leaf Clovers. So when you find your four leafs pass them on, another great activity for your kids!

Here’s what to do:

Find a four leaf clover/clovers

Fold it in a square of wax paper

Place it in a book or under a paperweight

Leave it to dry for 24 hours

Go to the link below and contact them through email.

They will then Email you the mailing address.

SEND THE CLOVER IN THE WAX PAPER!

Zip A Dee Doo Dah – Zip A Dee DAY!

The weather the last few days has been amazing! Feels like an early spring is heading our way!

On our daily walks my little blue bird and I look and listen for all the neighborhood animals, it helps with keeping her in the stroller. We stop and pet the dogs being walked, we look for sleeping cats under the trees; we count the squirrels running about, the butterflies too! The different birds we usually see are the Ibis, the Egret, Cardinals, Mocking birds, and today there was an especially loud Blue Jay!

My little bird watcher yelled “ LOOK LOOK Blue Jay Bird Mama, Zip dee do dah song! “ She’s a genius I tell ya because with all this SUNSHINE and the animals flittering about it is most definitely a ZIP A DEE DOO DAH DAY!

Swimming and Gymnastic lessons at Tampa Bay Turner’s – Check it out!

Looking for fun classes for kids? Check out Tampa Bay Turners gymnastics and swimming programs!

We just love the aquatics department and have been going to swimming lessons for almost a year now. We started out with Mommy and Me swim lessons and we really enjoyed it! It was a lot of fun to participate and watch my little jellyfish wiggle and laugh. She especially liked the songs and bubbles during the swim lessons!

When my little splasher was ready to advance to the next level I just couldn’t believe it, the progress she made in such a short amount of time was amazing.  We had taken lessons elsewhere and she didn’t show nearly the enthusiasm or progress until Ms. Diane and Ms. Alyssa! Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU!!

My little tadpole is now in the advanced beginners class without me! AAAGH!! Should I just hand over the car keys too! I was completely anxiety ridden to have her in the water without me and thought I don’t know if she’s ready, truth is I wasn’t so ready…but with the help of other supportive mothers cheering us on, who no doubt had already gone through the same separation angst, we took the plunge and moved her up. It almost felt like I was throwing her into the great abyss but she just toddled right on over to the edge of the pool and never looked back! I have to say it was a great move for the both of us she gets to be independent and I get a breather!

Now I have to tell you that the first few sessions I stayed on the bench by the pool ready to leap up at the slightest hiccup! Then I finally graduated to the room behind the glass.  Pat on the back! I still find myself occasionally plastered to that window when I’m counting how long she’s been holding her breath but I am getting much better. It helps that I have met some amazing mothers to share ideas, stories and laughs with while we watch our kiddos thrive!

Our experience at TBT has been wonderful! They have great instructors who are experienced, patient and very genuine in teaching the little sea monsters how to swim! We love getting stickers for an after class reward and we save all her ribbons as she masters new skills.  My little fishy just loves her swim coach and I feel completely at ease with having my little one in her hands! She slides off the side of the pool and swims back to the wall now so I’m more confident when we are around water which is a huge relief! My little tadpole just loves the water, swimming with her friends and learning how to swim! YIPPEE!! BUBBLE BUBBLE SPLASH!

Now that we are well into a swim lesson routine, I thought I’d check out the gymnastic side of TBT - We just started gymnastics today and again my little Mary Lou LOVED it! There is circle time with songs and dancing and a great guided obstacle course for the kiddos- She had so much fun and it wore her out! YAY!!! Take a moment to check out the links below!

Three Great IKEA finds for kids all together under $50 bucks!

Three Great IKEA Finds For Kids!

I have found the best little toddler table and chairs!  Its super inexpensive and super easy to put together! $19.99 AT IKEA – that’s including the chairs! It’s definitely worth a trip to the store. I was specifically looking for something small and lightweight for our tiny tot and this is it!  It’s made out of Pine with a easy clean fiberboard top. They also have a larger table we liked with height adjustable legs, link below. For us the smaller one is perfect! I love this one because I can easily move it from room to room– the bedroom for teatime, the living room for puzzles and the kitchen for DINNER! It cleans with a breeze and for the price you just can’t beat it. LOVE IT!

This little table has also helped with those times she doesn’t want to sit in the highchair for meals!  We give a choice – the chair or the table and most of the time it’s the table! Along with her stuffed animal of choice in the other chair!! It works for snack times too!  She looks like a big kid sitting up tall in her chair!

This table set is perfect for activities like play dough, painting, coloring, and much more! We picked up the “Paint Box Set’ for $6.99.  It has paint, colored pencils and crayons. The colors are nice and bright!

Looking for a small storage bin! This one matches the table chair set and like the table set it's super easy to move around and keep clean!

We’ve been working on CLEAN UP TIME and this storage box works wonders!! I like it because its lightweight and my toddler can easily lift the lid. It the perfect get it off the floor toss in bin that can be used in any room! YIPEE!

Three great finds at IKEA all together for under $50.00! YAY!!

Treasure Mapping for Moms!

Happy NEW Year everyone!

Time to collect your thoughts and dive in to the year ahead! IT’S GOING TO BE A GREAT YEAR!!

I thought I’d share one of my favorite things I like to do this time of year – It’s a nice down time activity and it’s a lot of fun! I call it my Treasure Map! It’s a wish list slash resolution slash motivational project I like to do for myself! Think of it as a positive reinforcement to do list collage.  Yes it’s time for you to be a little creative for yourself! You can do it, I promise! When your done you’ll have a really cool visual to keep you motivated!

 Here’s what you do:

Get yourself a poster board any color you like, a stack of magazines, scissors and glue or double side tape. Pick a variety of magazines, I like to use a travel, a parenting, health/food and the fashion/entertainment ones are good to.

Start looking through the magazines cutting out things that appeal to you.  Cut out pictures of things you want to start doing, places you want to travel to, healthy foods, WORDS and phrases that have an impact on you, you can cut out letters and make your own as well. Think about career, relationships, goals, family. Look for things on your wish list and you must pick some pictures just for fun!

I always like to put in things like travel, health, nature, fun, and lots of room for words. Words can sometimes have the most impact. I found a great quote, “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone”. Take that!

After you cut some things out start placing them on your poster board. Section off your board to areas like health, travel, fun or just glue them on randomly, anything goes! I like to cover almost my entire poster leaving a few open spaces to add things when I get some new ideas and revamp my goals!

I always have a travel section, Fiji is on my wish list and makes it to all my posters, found a nice beach picture to represent that.  We can’t wait to take our kiddo to Disney, I found a Mickey Mouse and cut him out and glued him in that corner! I put on the words New York and stuck an airplane next to it! And a beautiful waterfall, I can already feel the mist on my face.  VACATION, Here we come!!

I like to have a healthy section where I put on pictures of yummy foods like fruits and veggies, found a big strawberry frozen treat with a great picture of a cucumber feta salad! I’ve been making smoothies all week for breakfast!! And adding a salad to my dinner every night! One of my favorite pics I found this time is a big glass of bubbly water to remind me to hydrate, hydrate, and HYDRATE!

You want to start a fitness class or manifest some serenity in your life? Find some exercise photos like running or Yoga poses and surround them with positive affirmations and words like strength, endurance, get fit! I always love to find pictures of flowers and animals, my last board had a big lion roaring on it! Yep - Hear me ROAR! Add some comic relief, laughter really is the best medicine. I would love for my toddler to sleep through the night, I put a picture of a moon with stars, a row of pillows and next to that a cute sleeping baby! Crossing my fingers on that one!

Here's a peek at my Treasure Map =

Make a new Treasure Map as things you have on the poster start to manifest – you made the vacation happen – you’ve been eating better – you got that item on your wish list.

I keep my Treasure Map in my bedroom – It’s one of the first things I see in the morning, off to make my smoothie…and one of the last I see before bed, I look at my moon and stars, the sleeping baby on her pillows and have faith my little dreamer in the next room will sleep for a few consecutive hours.

I love the visual reminder of eating great foods, keeping active, the places I want to visit. The flowers and fun stuff in addition to adding color and prettiness to my map, just reminds me to stop every day and enjoy a moment, share a laugh, and sometimes just to stop and smell the roses!!

HAVE FUN! BE CREATIVE! MAKE THINGS HAPPEN!

Fun Family Tradition -The Elf on the Shelf

See video

The ELF on the SHELF – A Fun Family Tradition

I came across this really cool fun family tradition that we are definitely going to start in our house. I’m really excited about it!  It’s called “Elf on the Shelf a family tradition”. The Elf is Santa’s eyes and ears in your home every year during the holidays!

This Elf doll comes with a book about who he is and what he does. You can order a little skirt to make it female; it is also available in two skin tones and different eye colors.

The first thing to do is read the book together and as a family you’ll need to think of a special name for the little guy! Most importantly though the kiddos aren’t supposed to touch the elf or he will lose some of his magic! Seems a little rough but I guess you want the elf to last for a while and not be found “hiding” in the Christmas tree water!  No worries though they also have “plushies”, soft elf toys that the kids can play with! This little guy is going to be a great behavior tool to boot!  We can all use a little back up now and then, especially around the holidays!

The Elf is Santa’s little spy. It is his job is to report back to the big guy each night on who’s been naughty and nice… so you better watch out! THE ELF IS WATCHING YOUR KIDS EVERY MOVE to make sure they are being good! Remind your little sugarplums before bedtime to tell the elf something good they did during the day so he can make sure he tells Santa. Throughout the day give your kiddos some positive reinforcement, when you catch them doing something good say to them “that’s something we can share with the ELF tonight”! Rather then,  “if you don’t knock it off I’m telling the Elf!” HA! But, whatever works!

The Elf flies back from the North Pole to your home each morning and lands in a different place. The idea is that every night you hide the Elf somewhere different for the kids to try to find in the morning.  A really cute hide and seek tradition that you can do forever, no matter how big the kids get.

It’s your job to set up cute little scenarios after the kiddos are asleep like secretly leave a trail of footprints about (little prints in baby powder seems to do the trick just fine). I used to do this in my Kindergarten classroom at St. Patrick’s Day with a little Leprechaun, he would leave a couple skittles at their seats while they were at lunch and the kids got a huge kick out it! So maybe leave out some gumdrops or a candy cane! You can also leave some crumbs next to cookies so it looks like elf had a little snack after his long flight back to your house. Make this tradition your own by coming up your own little adventures.

We are really looking forward to making this a part of our family holiday fun! I can’t wait to watch my little Elfologist going hunting around looking for him!

Santa Picture Day Tips!

Santa Picture Day Tips!

Happy Holidays! It's that time of year for the traditional picture with Santa Claus! OH…JOY…Time to pick out a super cute outfit that you will cover with bubble wrap till you get to the mall but inevitably will get a spot on it right before the picture! Time to listen to some parents threaten their little angels in line to smile or Santa wont bring them any presents, nothing like creating traumatizing childhood memories! Time to kiss the photographers rosy cheek so they don’t give you a nice shot with your little sugar plums eyes closed! Oh yes.. ‘Tis the season!!

Last year the grand event didn’t go so well for us but we did get the classic terrified crying picture with Santa that someday she’ll laugh over…I know as her loving parents we will! This year we are prepping her for the big day in hopes it will go a little smoother. I thought I’d share some things we are going to do this year that, cross our fingers, make a wish, and pray to the big fat guy in the red suit, will make all the difference and might make your big trip to the center of the mall go a little easier too.

Make sure that your talking a lot about Ole’ St. Nick!  He lives in the North Pole where all year long his elves make toys in the toy factory. He is the patron Saint of Giving so he travels around the world on Christmas Eve in his super sonic speed sleigh with his eight flying reindeer to bring all the nice children gifts for Christmas. Good time to mention to your little carolers they might not want to pull down the Christmas Tree before then or he wont be shoving himself down your chimney! Talk about his outfit, the famous white and red velvet suit with the big buckle to hold in his holly jolly belly (that’s on my list this year) and don’t forget to do his “HO HO HO Merry Christmas” laugh!

A great bedtime story is “ The Night Before Christmas “. We read it over and over! Our little Cindy Lou loves it!

Go visit Santa a couple days BEFORE picture day on one of your shopping outings! Stand off to the side and let the kids see what’s going on and watch the other children talk to Santa and get their picture taken.  We’ve actually made a couple trips and on the last trip I didn’t leave with claw marks on my shoulder so she does has more recognition now and I’m thinking technically he’s not a stranger anymore, right? geez…

Write a letter to Santa with your little gumdrops to bring to him on picture day!

On picture day make sure that you’re your little elves are well rested, so plan your trip first thing in the morning or after a rest. Feed your hungry little reindeer first or bring a snack and water for the line. Take them to the bathroom before you get in line! Primp them when you’re a couple people away don’t try to brush their hair on Santa’s lap. When you get up to the big guy let the photographers and his elves do their job. Yelling “LOOK HERE, SMILE FOR MOMMY, SAY CHEESE” isn’t going to help your stressed out little snowman! And distracts them from the lens so relax!

This year I’m just gonna go with the snow and if we can at least get her in the picture frame - I’ll be decking the halls! So with all that said, If the big day turns out to be a complete nightmare and not candy cane dreams – LET IT GO, LET IT GO, LET IT GO!!!

Happy Turkey Day!

Happy Turkey Day!!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!  This year once again I am reminded that life is grand! I am so thankful for all our family and friends! We wish you a Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours!

I love this time of year because Thanksgiving for us is the beginning of the holidays and the anticipation of Christmas truly begins! Our neighbors are already in their front yard untangling Christmas lights and I must say I am all ready to put our lights up the day after Turkey day! Good luck to those of you who have the patience to venture out shopping on manic black friday!

As your getting ready for Thanksgiving day I’d thought I’d pass along some quick cute ideas I found to keep the kiddos occupied while your figuring out your recipes and finding the turkey platter or even while your guests are arriving!

Hands and feet turkey craft!

http://crafts.kaboose.com/hands-and-feet-turkey.html

Keep ‘em busy while guests arrive with this Sunflower of Thanks activity – this one is really sweet and everyone can join the fun! Have the kids read the petals to everyone.

http://crafts.kaboose.com/sunflower-of-thanks.html

It doesn’t matter how much I eat during the sit down dinner something about leftovers in the middle of the night just draws me to the fridge! I am a pilgrim of midnight snacking so I thought this little poem was to cute not to pass along to all the fellow night scavengers – this ones for you!

'TWAS THE NIGHT OF THANKSGIVING

Twas the night of Thanksgiving, but I just couldn't sleep.
I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep. The leftovers beckoned-the dark meat and white,
but I fought the temptation with all of my might.

Tossing and turning with anticipation,
the thought of a snack became infatuation.
So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door and gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore.

I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,
pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes.

I felt myself swelling so plump and so round, till all of a sudden, I rose off the ground,
I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky,
With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie.
But, I managed to yell as I soared past the trees.......
happy eating to all---pass the cranberries, please!

~~Author Unknown~~

LET THE HOLIDAYS BEGIN!

I don’t about all of you but I can’t wait to pig out and topple over from to much turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberries, sweet potatoes, cookies, pumpkin pie, apple pie…and lots more....Tis the season!! CHEERS!

Have a Fun and Happy Thanksgiving!
