An Arts Conversation For St. Petersburg

Impact of the Arts

There was a great article today in the Times about the economic impact of the arts in St. Petersburg.  The full report is to be released soon but what was printed today shows that the arts contribute significantly to the economic health of St. Petersburg.

Arts Walk

The arts walk last night was a success.  Walking around stopping in the galleries I saw a lot people out and about.  The show at the Moren Art Center on Central and 7th is great.  You really have to go and see it before it leaves.  http://moreanartscenter.org/exhibitions/index.html

Ricky Bernstein has a fabulous exhibit of his work there.   I mean these pieces are fantastic.  From the website "

What Ricky does best is tell visual stories. His oversized cartoon graphics pull us into domestic dramas that humanely poke fun at our past and present lives. Using a variety of materials, Ricky composes narrative, collage-style wall reliefs with a distinct pop-art flavor. In a delightful way, common stories take on larger than life proprtion-a compelling slice of American in still life sit-com.

The Pinellas County Arts Council

The Pinellas County Arts Council was absorbed by the county and renamed the department of cultural affairs.  Now because of the recession they are thinking about dropping it all together.  That would be a mistake in my opinion.  There have been several studies showing more people attend cultural events than sporting events.  The county will entertain using taxpayer money for a new stadium so maybe if someone could figure out how to make the arts a sporting event the county would find the money to support more cultural events and at the very least not cancel the department of cultural affairs.

Loving St. Pete

I love the art in St. Pete, so much to see and do... the jacarandas are so beautiful, and the magnolia trees as well.... our waterfront is spectacular.... am happy to be in st. pete......

Arts scene

I took the time Sat. to walk thru the new art galleries on Central Avenue and very impressed.   It seems like a good mix of art and after talking to several of the artists and gallery owners I left with the impression that as a group they are very positive about the venture going forward.   St. Petersburg has a thriving art community and its great to see the addition of these artist studios/galleries.

Rainy Day

I waited until today to go see the artshow downtown but it rained all day.  I hope Saturday was a good day for the artists.  Its a lot of hard work to exhibit your art at an artshow and to have it cut in half by a rain day can be discouraging.  I know Mainsail is a premium show too and the artist count on it for sales so hopefully Saturday made it worth it.
