Rough Country by John Sandford

I have been reading Rough Country by John Sandford.  Its one of his Virgil Flowers whodoneit books.   Sandford wrote the 'Prey' series of books with Lucas Davenport as his hero.  These Virgil Flowers are an off shoot of those.  This series is also set in Minnesota with Virgil being a state cop who now works for Lucas D.

I really like Sandford, he is one of my favorites and I have read all the 2 dozen or so of his Prey series.   This is the 3rd Virgil Flowers book and I have read the first two and really enjoyed them.

This action takes place in northern Minnesota with a moderately wealthy ad agency owner being shot in the head while canoeing.    The victum is a woman named Erica McDill who is staying at a resort that caters to women some of whom are gay and some are straight.

So of course the mystery is who would want her dead and why.  Sandford has a great gift for timing the action.  It moves along and never gets wrapped up in tedium about stuff the reader could care less about.  Which is something I have noticed writers do from time to time.  They go on and on about sometihng they are probably interested in but not to many other people are.

I like the lead character Virgil.   He's a little rock and roll which is great.  Sandford has good taste in describing Virgil sexual encounters which are only one per book but he handles it well.  I like the 'locker room' dialogue between the cops it seems very realistic.  I am probably 85% thru the book and there are still a few choices of who could have done the shooting so that's always nice.   I really don't like to figure it out too soon.  Bad writing when you can figure it out half way thru.
